Because I love cats, this was a fun quilt to make.

Each block has a store-bought batik square in the center. Surrounding the center square are simple square and and triangle patches sewn together to look like pinwheels.

The inside border is a series of half-square triangles with a simple strip of blue fabric between them. The outside border was made by sewing strips of purple fabric together and then cutting them on an angle to make it look like diamonds.

Because I wanted the arrow-looking border to come out even, I needed to do something in the corners, so I added little squares. Each corner has a tiny pinwheel (with a border to make it the right size), two pieced fish, and a pieced mouse.

Then I added a simple black border.

It looks kind of complicated, and may sound difficult, but taking one step at a time, it was really pretty easy.

On a summer trip our family visited Chartres Cathederal in France.
I tried to capture the color of the stained glass windows in this quilt. It is hand pieced and machine quilted.
It is based on the kaleidoscope block.
It hangs in the Learning Center on the University of Alaska campus in Sitka, Alaska.

Basic Equipment
You will need a full array of basic sewing tools plus some special quilting gadgets in order to successfully make a quilt. Perhaps the early quilters used only some scissors, a straightedge (ruler), plus needle and thimble to make their glorious quilts. Today we have tools that improve the precision of modern quilts and the ease with which they can be made.

Understanding Quilt Patterns
What does the term quilt pattern mean? Webster’s dictionary gives us two definitions for pattern that apply here: “an orderly sequence consisting of a number of repeated or complementary elements, decorative motifs, etc.” and “a style of design or applied decoration.”

Choosing a Quilt Pattern
Deciding what quilt pattern to make is a common dilemma for quilters, followed by what colors and fabrics to use to enhance the pattern to make a striking quilt. Some people focus so much on these decisions that they never move on to making their first quilt.

Choosing Colors
One of the questions that novice and intermediate quilters frequently ask is how to choose colors and prints that will make a quilt as lovely as the quilts they see in pictures and at quilt shows. One of the great aspects of making your own quilt is that you get to do your own design. It’s normal to think that everyone else’s quilt design is better than your own; expert quilt-makers still compare their work with that of others. With some knowledge of basic color and pattern schemes you too can make a beautiful quilt that reflects your taste and personality

Preparing Fabrics
There’s no question that fashioning a fine quilt is quite plainly a lot of work! Making a quilt requires painstaking and careful effort to cut each piece of the quilt block accurately and to stitch the pieces with just the right seam allowance so that points and curves match well. Preparing the right fabrics will ensure permanence of a quilt.

Batik

Batik (rhymes with unique) is a technique for adding dyes to fabric to make unusual designs. Batik fabrics in 100% cotton are being sold as quilting fabrics. Using one or more batik fabrics in your quilt will give a new and different bolder effect to your artwork over using traditional fabric designs. The following pictures show some sample batik fabric designs.

Examples of batik fabrics

If you want more examples of batiks, particularly Indonesian batiks of 100% cotton, go to batiksbydesign.com. This is a startup internet company that is run by hard-core quilters who have lived in Indonesia, and know what quilters want. Patti (my wife) lived in Indonesia for 2 years, has been in and out of the country many times, and has done batik quilts. She also made friends with other passionate quilters while she was there, and decided that the quilting world needed to know more about Indonesian batiks.
I'm working there now, and we have organized a local (Indonesian) buyer, local (expatriate - foreign) quilters who pass judgement on the fabrics, and now have Indonesian batiks available, online, in a variety of designs. We will be adding to our designs constantly, because most of the batik producers make only relatively short runs of each design, then they design new ones, or return to other traditional batiks. The web store is just starting, but it will be a valuable resource in the future. Take a look at the designs that she thinks will be great for quilting.
Not all fabrics are especially suitable for quilting. For example, hand-woven fabrics, as beautiful as they are, may unravel in your quilt. Not nice. So you want machine-woven fabrics. (There goes the romance of the hand-woven aspect.) Also, unless you want to do applique, you generally need small designs on the batiks. Batiks are beautiful, and there are TONS of designs and colors. In fact, that's one of the problems: They keep changing them, so it makes it difficult to keep them in stock. A design that's there one week may be gone the next. Also, batiks are made of many materials, including silk. Most are not great quilting stock. So we keep our buyers on the lookout for both old and new designs.

You can buy some of these beautiful fabrics at generally lower prices than otherwise offered, and you can be sure that each fabric was selected by someone just like you.

Cutting Mat with Cut Pieces

A quilt is made up of literally hundreds of individual pieces that are combined together in the pattern chosen for each of the quilt blocks. Most quilt patterns use the traditional shapes of squares, triangles, and diamonds. If you want your quilt blocks to come together properly when you piece them, it only makes sense that they will fit together better if each piece is cut properly to begin with. While you may be most eager to make some blocks, taking the time to properly prepare the fabric and to cut highly accurate pieces when you begin the quilt will pay great dividends in the quality of your completed quilt.

The key is to use the latest in modern tools for creating well-cut pieces. Using scissors to cut out a pattern for making clothing works quite fine for two reasons: one, you are only cutting through at most two layers of fabric; and two, you have an ample seam allowance to work with when the item is sewn together. Also the scale of what you are working on is human-size rather than a precision 8-inch, 10-inch, or 12-inch quilt block. There is a natural tendency to hold scissors at an angle when cutting fabric, so if you are cutting through multiple layers of quilt fabric with scissors the bottom pieces will be slightly smaller than the top pieces. This variation in the size of the pieces will definitely cause problems when you piece the quilt blocks.
